Monte Jewell practiced divorce and family law for
three years with Alterowitz Law Offices, followed by two years as an
attorney manager for the Domestic Violence Unit of Montana Legal Services
Association. Mr. Jewell resumed private law practice in 2002. He has
been admitted to practice before the Montana State Supreme
Court, the United States District Court for the District of
Montana, the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit,
the United States
Bankruptcy Court for the District of Montana and the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Court. He has worked as an advocate for survivors of domestic violence for more than ten years.
Mr. Jewell has briefed domestic violence issues for the Montana Supreme Court and served on the Montana State Bar Ethics Committee and Child and Family Law Section. He has served as a member of the Montana Criminal Justice Act Panel and the National Legal Aid and Defender Association.
He helped organize Planet Kids, the first sliding-fee scale supervised parenting and exchange center in Montana, and he has actively supported YWCA Missoula. He co-founded the Missoula Family Law Advice Clinic and the Missoula Parent Co-op Preschool. He served on the Board of Directors for the Blue Mountain Family Practice Clinic and currently as a member of the Montana Supreme Court Commission on Self-Represented Litigants. With his brother, Ryan Jewell, he co-founded openmissoula, a not-for-profit Montana corporation to support use of free and open source software by lawyers.
